Computer hacking:Anthem’s sour note.

Image
This could be one of the biggest corporate data breaches in history. MEDICAL and insurance records are like catnip for hackers, who can make a fortune by selling them in black markets on the internet. Anthem, one of America’s biggest medical insurers, has just discovered how tempting a target they make. On February 4th the company revealed that as many as 80m digital records of its customers and its employees may have been compromised after intruders broke into its systems. Anthem alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation to the theft and engaged Mandiant, a well-known cyber-security firm, to help with an investigation into what it has described as a “very sophisticated external cyberattack”. Joseph Swedish, the firm’s chief executive, has written a public letter personally apologising for the breach.

Epidemiology: Virulent encounters.

Image
Technology makes it easier to find sexual partners, but that may have knock-on effects. MANY men are keen to have more sex with more people, even if they don’t admit it to their other halves. Before the days of the internet, finding a casual partner meant putting in some effort: chatting up someone in a bar, say, or hanging about in a shady spot known to be frequented by like-minded people. Nowadays, a naughty encounter is but a click away, thanks to smartphone apps such as Tinder and Grindr and listings websites such as Craigslist. But with convenience comes less happy consequences, as a paper just published in MIS Quarterly suggests.

Alibaba runs into a regulatory ruckus.

Love on the rocks. The storm subsides, but clouds remain JACK MA, Alibaba’s chairman, likes to be seen as a self-made man. Other Chinese firms may cultivate their relationships with important Communist officials, but the boss of China’s biggest e-commerce firm has long insisted that he merely dates the government, and it will never lead to marriage. This week he stressed again that he is no red capitalist: “In Alibaba, I fiercely object to making all sorts of complicated, curious guanxi [connections].” Mr Ma is also keen for Alibaba to be regarded as a global innovator: “We are an internet company [that] happens to be in China.” His ambition is for Alibaba to serve two billion consumers and tens of millions of small companies worldwide.

Nigeria’s Election: A former dictator is a better choice than a failed president.

Image
The least awful. SOMETIMES there are no good options. Nigeria goes to the polls on February 14th to elect the next president, who will face problems so large—from rampant corruption to a jihadist insurgency—that they could break the country apart, with dire consequences for Nigerians and the world. And yet, as Africa’s biggest economy stages its most important election since the restoration of civilian rule in 1999, and perhaps since the civil war four decades ago, Nigerians must pick between the incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan, who has proved an utter failure, and the opposition leader, Muhammadu Buhari, a former military dictator with blood on his hands (see article ). The candidates stand as symbols of a broken political system that makes all Nigeria’s problems even more intractable.

Re: Buhari vs Jonathan: Beyond the election.

Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the immediate past Governor of Ekiti State and Head, Policy, Research and Strategy, Directorate of the APC Presidential Campaign, in this piece, reflects on the recent statement on the state of the country’s economy by former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Chukwuma Soludo…  We commend Professor Chukwuma Soludo for his insightful and incisive article published in the Vanguard Newspaper of January 26th under the above title. We agree with Professor Soludo that if the political parties, including ours, must justify the overwhelming enthusiasm of Nigerians about the 2015 elections, we must remain focused on the issues that matter most to them, which is the progress of our country and the well being of our people. Indeed, this has been the driving sentiment of our party and our campaign all along. President Jonathan Muhammadu Buhari While we accept his critical comments on our party, more for the intentions t

How to Make Money Investing in Real Estate.

Image
There are many strategies to make money as a real estate investor and some don't require owning the property. (Fotolia) There are four main ways you can make money as a real estate investor . Most involve owning real estate, but even that is not a necessity. For example, you could be doing assignments (essentially operating as a middleman), joint ventures (partnering with somebody else providing capital), or sandwich lease options (renting property and leasing it to somebody else). But typically, money is earned through one or more of the following four ways:

How to Make Money Instead of Trading Your Labor for It.

Image
(*Shutterstock) Money is infinite. There is not a finite amount of money on this earth. Suppose you had just purchased all the necessary materials to build a house, hired workers to do all the labor, and now find yourself with a fully-built house. Labor and materials have been evenly exchanged for money. The workers have traded their labor for financial compensation, and the materials were also traded for the appropriate amount of money. Nothing has been gained or lost. But, isn’t this house now worth more assembled than the cost of all the materials and labor it took to build it put together? Indeed it is so, for you have just  created  money.

Living With Herpes: Managing Life And HSV.

Image
No one wants to catch a viral lifelong STD such as herpes when there are no permanent cures for it. While the psychological impact can be overwhelming for those who just found out that they have contracted herpes and initially coming to terms with it can be difficult, remember, it is not your fault and certainly not the end of the world for you. Coping With A Herpes Diagnosis For most individuals, the initial reaction to a positive herpes diagnosis can range from shock, anger, sadness, guilt, fear or embarrassment. That can be followed by a few weeks or months of feeling emotionally loss, isolation, depression and a decreased self esteem. For those who are infected with genital herpes, it is understandably that you will most likely express feelings of anger and resentment against your sexual partner who may be responsible for your infection. However, it is important to point out that your partner may not know he or she has herpes since symptoms of herpes may not sho

50 Ways to Make a Fast $50.

Cartoonist Allen Saunders long ago expressed one of life's greatest truths: "Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans." No matter how carefully you plan, money can run a little short at times. Maybe your child needs new shoes. Maybe your car broke down, or maybe you just want a night out on the town. Whatever the reason, if you find yourself needing extra cash, there are plenty of ways to earn it -- now more than ever.

Striving For Early Retirement May Silently Kill You.

Image
The early retirement movement is awesome because it takes a lot of discipline to consistently save a large percentage of your paycheck and then walk away from a paycheck completely during your prime income earning years. When people ask me why I bother to consult post-early retirement, now I can unequivocally say “For the experience, and not for the money.” Because if I was doing things primary for the money, I wouldn’t have walked away from a multiple six figure finance job in the first place! Of course being paid a fair market wage for services performed is a requirement. It’s just not the main requirement.

Britain's coins go on trial at ancient ceremony.

Annual Trial of the Pyx puts Royal Mint’s work to the test, in tradition dating back to 13th century. Coins are examined by the jury at the Trial of the Pyx. Photograph: The Royal Mint The smallest and largest coins ever minted in the UK will be weighed by the Royal Mint as part of an ancient ceremony that dates back more than 700 years. The test will be part of the Trial of the Pyx, an annual quality assurance test to make sure that the coins being made by the mint are adhere to the benchmarks set out by the government. At the trial, first recorded in 1282, the Royal Mint and the master of the mint, currently George Osborne, are on trial. Modern legislation does not mention penalties if the jury does find spenders are being shortchanged.

(Mark Ralston/AFP/Getty Images) A series of recent remarks by China’s education minister, Yuan Guiren, have got many freethinking individuals in China concerned: according to Yuan, textbooks and thoughts from the “West” should be banished from Chinese schools. “Greater management should be put in place for using original Western teaching materials,” Yuan said, according to Xinhua, the state news agency. “Materials touting Western values are forbidden inside our classrooms.” Yuan was meeting representatives from universities across China in Beijing.

The world’s most beautiful markets.

Image
(Getty) Before the industrial age, people shopped for food in their local areas – often in beautiful covered halls and markets. Jonathan Glancey describes the best. When it comes to fresh food, there has long been a dividing line between Britain, the United States – or English-speaking countries – and much of the rest of the world. Early and rapid industrialisation in the former led to a divorce between great swathes of the population and the land they once farmed. Refrigeration, railways, suburban growth and the car have given rise to the supermarket, with its shrink-wrapped food, sell-by dates, and the branding and advertising of what we eat. Driving to edge-of-town supermarkets has resulted in the closure of family shops, the de-valuing of high streets and a decline in interaction between buyers, growers and sellers of food. The role of the supermarket was once played by covered markets in Britain and North America just as it is tod
