How scammers trick your mind.

Image
(Getty Images) Scammers play sophisticated psychological tricks to fool their marks, says Colin Barras, and that means anyone can be vulnerable unless they know what to look for. JP Morgan has revealed it suffered a massive cyber attack on 76 million private and seven million business customers in the US. None of us likes being scammed, and David Modic is no different. But it’s not the fact that scammers try to trick us into handing over our money that bothers him – it’s the way they can rob people of something far more important: their hope.

Is this just one more sign that Google is cooling off on its social network? If you're a brand-new Google user, then you might have noticed—or taken advantage of—a new modification that no longer ties your account to the company's Google+ social platform. According to a new report from Marketing Land , Google has quietly shelved the requirement that new Google account creators also create a Google+ profile during the signup process. Have you visited the dentist?

Image
(Getty Images) Is going to the dentist every six months really necessary for good oral health? Claudia Hammond investigates. A spice commonly found in curries may boost the brain's ability to heal itself A lot of us think that we should visit the dentist every six months – even if it’s not what we do in practice. Whether those biannual check-ups are really necessary is, however, a matter of debate. In fact, it’s not even clear where the six-month figure initially came from. Some believe it dates back to the 18th Century , long before the advent of randomised controlled trials that could test its benefits.

How to eliminate 50 percent of all coronary events.

The European Society of Cardiology estimates a 50 percent reduction of coronary events if you can stabilize soft, vulnerable plaques (1). We are often led to believe that plaques you can see on an angiogram are “killer” plaques. It’s true that if they are large enough to obstruct blood flow, they will decrease oxygen transfer to the heart muscle cells making them more tired with less effort. This is the definition of stable angina. It simply means it takes less effort to over-exert the heart muscles before they fatigue. However, you need approximately a 90 percent total obstruction of the blood vessel to develop stable angina. These plaques account for most of the plaques you might find in an angiogram. This is why if you take an angiogram, you are often immediately wheeled into the operating room to have a stent put into the artery with the belief you are only seconds away from an immediate heart attack and death.

ABR (Auditory Brainstem Response) Test After an 8 long months of trying to get an ABR scheduled, Jameson finally had his appointment today.  What they say is true, you really gotta keep fighting for these kids because no one else is going to.  All of the doctors have been great, don’t get me wrong, but when one little mistake happens in the system with referrals the process has to start all over again, and if you don’t initiate the process no one else will. What we have known for quite some time has finally been confirmed – Jameson has moderate hearing loss in both ears, the left is a little worse than the right.  He has trouble picking up low and middle tones in his right ear and does okay with the high ones, and in his left he has trouble with the low and high tones, and picks up just a little of the mid-tones.  The doctor did say his hearing loss is conductive, which is common with these kids.  So, hearing aids are next!

He's Not Scary,He's A Little Boy 2.

Image
First, let me back track: January 30, 2014 At Jameson’s post-op appointment last year (Feb 2013) Dr. Fearon was very pleased with the surgery and Jameson’s recovery.  His instructions were to let Jameson just be a toddler, do a 6 month follow up sleep study and a 1 year follow up MRI and visit with him.   Everything else along the way we could do here at home, ENT, eyes, audiology… So, that’s what we did.  Jameson visits his ophthalmologist every 4 months to check for corneal dryness and optic pressure; so far so good!  ENT, well, you all know by now Jameson has mild to moderate hearing loss.  He got his hearing aids mid-December.

He’s Not Scary, He’s A Little Boy.

Image
We’ve had some encounters recently that have inspired me to write this post.  This is something I hope everyone reads and shares.  This is a message that doesn’t just pertain to Jameson, but to all children who are made fun of and singled out for their differences; and I am pretty sure their parents feel the same way I do. I want to begin by saying that I don’t hold anything against these children, or their parents.  I understand that it can be extremely awkward when your child is the one making fun or being mean to another child.  But, the next time this happens I hope these parents do more.  Because although I cannot take offense, I would be lying if I said it didn’t hurt.  It does.  It hurts to see my child be made fun of, knowing that this will be a big part of his world the rest of his life.
