The Second Marriage-The Prospect.

(Thinkstock) G D Lengacher thought he’d done everything right — financially — when he married his second wife in 2013. To prepare for sharing bank accounts, as well as lives, the couple combined finances on paper and ran a joint budget for almost a year. It wasn’t enough. They were quickly surprised by the cost of their combined family of seven. “It started with my wife’s house not selling quickly like we thought it would,” said Lengacher, 46, who lives in Indiana in the US and produces a weekly  podcast  on surviving divorce. “We also grossly underestimated what our utility bills would be as a combined family. Add to that the expenses of having three kids in college and it quickly became apparent that we were overly optimistic in our budget estimates.” They tightened their budget, and rented the house rather than selling it. “It eliminated the financial strain of an extra mortgage payment,” Lengacher said. EBOLA:KUDOS TO NIGERIA.

Nigeria contains Ebola – and US officials want to know more. US teams are headed to Nigeria to learn about its success in using 'contact tracing' – a significant practical step that limited the spread of the virus. The possibility that Ebola would reach and spread in Nigeria was broached with great trepidation by public health experts. Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country. It is currently failing to contain an Islamist insurgency in the northeast, and prospects for controlling a fearful virus seemed bleak – particularly in Lagos, the nation’s coastal megacity and transport hub.

Google to put guards on payroll.

Google has decided to have security guards on its payroll, rather than have them placed by a contractor, amidst concerns about income disparities in Silicon Valley. The move is likely to put new pressure on other companies in the area to also change their policies on using contract staff in functions like security guards, janitors and cooks. “Building an in-house security team is something we are excited to do. A year ago we in-sourced the Google security operations center and we are looking forward to making these valued positions both full- and part-time Google employees,” a Google spokeswoman wrote via email. The company did not respond to a query whether its policy would be extended to ...

Why are Western women joining Islamic State?

Image
By Dr Katherine Brown Lecturer in Defence Studies, King's College London Khadijah Dare, here with her husband Abu Bakr, tweeted that she wanted to kill a Western hostage Recent news stories, such as those of the missing school girl Yusra Hussien, university student Aqsa Mahmood and twins Salma and Zahra Halane, have triggered concerns about the radicalisation of Muslim women in the UK. It's estimated that some 50-60 women from the UK have travelled to Syria via Turkey to join the militant extremist movement Islamic State (IS). On arrival they join others from a range of countries, including the US, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Canada, Norway and Sweden. Just why are women from these Western countries joining up? In the case of Yusra Hussien, it is unclear whether she has been radicalised or indeed whether she has even travelled to Syria (although police believe this to be likely)....
